At the April 13, 2016 Newport City Council meeting, the City Council appointed Joseph J. Nicholson, Jr., Esq. to serve as Newport's City Manager.
Office of the City Manager
The City of Newport operates under a Council-Manager form of government, whereby the City Manager serves as the Chief Administrative Officer. The City Managers Office is responsible for overseeing all day-to-day City operations, directing all administrative City departments including public safety, preparation of the annual budget and insuring financial stability, facilitating strategic planning for preservation and development, and for maintaining the City's overall commitment to providing high quality services to Newport residents and visitors.
The City of Newport provides a full range of municipal services to its residents, businesses, institutions and visitors. Its mission includes all elements of public safety, transportation, recreation, land use control and sanitation. Newport is a major tourism destination in southern New England and has a significant military presence.
As a direct service supplier the City of Newport uses a skilled work force and proven service industry technology to provide services, and protect the City's nationally significant natural and historic resources. To remain successful Newport will expand its hospitality, military education, and technology-based economy while protecting its residential desirability.
