Annual & Sick Leave; Holidays

Vacation

Annual Leave

All regular full-time employees of the City of Newport shall accrue annual (vacation) leave on a biweekly basis. Employees are eligible to use annual leave after the completion of thirty (30) days employment and with a minimum available balance of eight (8) hours. Accrual of annual leave is as follows:

AFSCME Council 94 & Unionized Supervisory Municipal Employees (NEARI)

Three (3) hours biweekly for each month employed up to the third year of employment.

Four (4) hours biweekly for each month employed from the fourth year of employment up to the tenth year of employment.

Five (5) hours biweekly for each month employed from the eleventh year of employment up to the twelfth year of employment.

Six (6) hours biweekly for each month employed after the twelfth year of employment.

Maximum allowable annual leave accumulation shall be 300 hours for Council 94 Employees and 200 hours for NEARI Employees respectively.

Executive-level Employees and Fire Employees

Four (4) hours biweekly for each month employed from the first year of employment up to the tenth year of employment. 

Six (6) hours biweekly for each month employed beginning the eleventh year of employment up to the fifteenth year of employment. 

Eight (8) hours biweekly for each month employed after the sixteenth year of employment.

Maximum allowable annual leave accumulation shall be 400 hours

Uniform Police

Four (4) hours biweekly for each month employed from the first year of employment up to the tenth year of employment. 

Six (6) hours biweekly for each month employed beginning the eleventh year of employment up to the fifteenth year of employment. 

Eight (8) hours biweekly for each month employed after the sixteenth year of employment. 

Maximum allowable annual leave accumulation shall be 400 hours for members hired prior to 7/1/2014
Maximum allowable annual leave accumulation shall be 300 hours for members hired on/after 7/1/2014

Sick Leave

Paid-Sick-Leave

All regular full-time employees of the City of Newport shall accrue sick leave on a bi-weekly basis. Employees are eligible to use sick leave after the completion of thirty (30) days employment and with a minimum available balance of eight (8) hours.

All employees accrue a total of four (4) hours bi-weekly of sick leave hours throughout their duration of employment with the City of Newport. Maximum allowable sick leave accumulations shall be as follows:

AFSCME, NEARI and Executive-level Employees

  • Unlimited hours if employed before 7/1/95
  • 960 hours if employed on or after 7/1/95

Police and Fire Uniform Employees

  • Unlimited hours

When a holiday falls on a Saturday, it shall be observed on the proceeding Friday.

When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be observed as the holiday.
