Canvassing

The Canvassing Office is your source for election and voter registration information. Our office works hand in hand with a trio of accomplished civil servants appointed by the City Council to serve on the Newport Canvassing Authority. From helping voters register on time to tallying the votes on election day, our team is actively involved in all phases of the city's electoral process and cooperates with the Secretary of State and the State Board of Elections to ensure every election is handled with the utmost care.
 

April 2, 2024 Presidential Preference Primary 

Important Dates and Deadlines

  • March 3, 2024 - Last day to register to vote or change your party affiliation to be eligible to vote in the Presidential Preference Primary. Completed paper registration forms may be placed in the City Hall drop box on a Bull Street.

  • March 8, 2024 at 4:00 pm. - The preliminary list of eligible voters for the Presidential Preference Primary is available in the Canvassing Office and online here.

  • March 12, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. - The Canvassing Authority Board met to canvass the final list of eligible voters for the Presidential Preference Primary and to hear objections to the inclusion or exclusion of any registered voter. The final list is available online here or in the Canvassing Office.

  • ​March 12, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. - Deadline to request a mail ballot for the Presidential Preference Primary.

  • March 13, 2024 - Early voting begins at City Hall in the Second Floor Conference Room and emergency ballots are available in the Canvassing Office.   

  • April 1, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. - Early voting and emergency mail ballots end.

  • April 2, 2024 - Election Day - Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In order to vote, you must go to your assigned polling place. Check your polling location here or call the Canvassing Office at 401-845-5386. Newport will be using Park Holm Senior Center, Donovan Manor and the Newport Public Library as polling locations.

  • New for 2024 – 17-year-olds now have the right to vote in party primaries if they will be 18 years old by Election Day on November 5, 2024 according to RI General Law 17-1-3.

  • April 4, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. – The Canvassing Authority Board will meet to tabulate write-in votes from the Presidential Preference Primary and adjudicate any provisional ballots.


  • Voter Registration

    There are several ways to register to vote in Rhode Island. Whether you're a first-time voter, moved and need to update your voter information, or want to change your party affiliation, Newport's Canvassing office is here to help. 

  • Register to vote during you next transaction with the DMV. Unless you opt-out, your information will be passed along to our office to be updated. 
  • Mail in a paper Voter Registration Form or drop it off in person at the Canvassing Office in City Hall.
  • Register to Vote Online (Must have a RI Drivers License or RI State ID number to verify your identity in order to use this feature.)
  • Update My Registration Online (Must have a RI Drivers License or RI State ID number to verify your identity in order to use this feature.)
  • Please note that you may register to vote at any time, but to be eligible to vote in an upcoming election, you must be registered at least 30 days in advance. To be eligible in a party primary, you must be a member of that party or an Unaffiliated voter at least 30 days in advance of the primary.

    Registration Requirements:
  • You must be a citizen of the United States
  • You must be a legal resident of Rhode Island
  • You may pre-register at age 16 but you must be at least 18 years of age to vote on Election Day
  • If you move or change your name you are required to update your voter registration.



    If you have moved out of state or otherwise wish to cancel your voter registration, please submit an Affidavit for Cancellation and Removal to our office.


Ways to Vote in Rhode Island

RI Voters have several options when it comes to how we vote. You can:
  • Vote from Home with a Mail Ballot
  • Vote early at Newport City Hall for the 20 day period before Election Day. Early voting is available during regular business hours up until 4 p.m. on the day before Election Day. Don't forget to bring a valid photo ID.
  • On Election Day, you must vote at your assigned polling place. Check your polling place before each election as they can change from year to year depending on availability or the size of the election. Don't forget to bring a valid photo ID.

The City's Board of Canvassers is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the election process, meeting regularly to prepare for upcoming elections. 

Be a Poll Worker!

We are always looking for more help on Election Day. We have several paid positions available at each polling location every election. Training is provided and be aware that poll workers are required to be at the polls from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day.
